I know the owner and it was sad to see the photos. Water made it's way into the end grain at the top of the mast over the years. I would worry leaving a wooden mast in all season but it's typical of many of these schooners. Plus paint on a spar is a little trickier to keep on eye on the state of the wood underneath, than varnish.
