I saw photos and the owners(whom I know) description. This past spring he noticed the standing rigging was very loose. Somebody went up in a crane and took photos. The straps and tangs that cross the top and connect to the stays, had sunk into the mast head. It was all rotted and beyond a fast repair so he used the boat without it this season. They mostly use it for a summer home on a mooring.
It would seem most of the stick should be sound but I'll let you know when I find out what the owner does. I had another friend with a painted spar that snapped 2/3rds up during stepping. You can't always see what's going on beneath paint, and it's not hard to just keep painting over a building rot beneath.
