At their worst, they are the problem. Despite manufacturers claims to the contrary, wraps trap water beneath siding and trim. That's a bigger problem today with materials(windows, siding, sheating) that rot in short order compared to materials like board sheathing.

I've seen lots of water damage over the years and usually, housewrap is involved. I'm trying to find more information on the subject, I'd like to do an article on it.
