OK, I will once again show my modern technology black hole.
I am familiar with a typical inverter like Les describes, an "inverter" which magically changes 12v DC to 120v AC and is rated for so many watts of AC load. Both the Island Packet and the new Hunter have a thing the owner's manuals refer to as an inverter/charger that is part of the shore power system. Neither manual offers much as far as details on what this device does. I understand that it charges the batteries and my best understanding of the "inverter" side is that it changes 120v AC to 12v DC to take up the 12v electrical load from the battery bank when the boat is plugged in to shore power.
Is that correct or am I missing the mark (again)?
