I have fond memories of returning to Casco Bay in the fog from Boothbay Harbor in my 18' Herreshoff America catboat. It were 'thick-o-fog' but I was pretty certain where I was as Bailey's Island was just beginning to show in a crack of sunlight. It was kind of cool when a lobsterman pointed me in the right direction, unasked, but I was were I thought I was.
Frankly, sailing in SoCal in the fog trying to return to port was more nerve-wracking. Once you saw the beach, there was no way of knowing whether you were N or S of the entrance and no warning either. At least in Maine, points, lighthouses and islands had unique characteristics that could be recognized--- and surf on rocks made more noise (and glistening flashes of white foam) than a California beach...
