The best thing to do with the piezo style is ensure that it is clean and dry, and that the gap inside the BBQ is clean and short. Too big a gap and the spark won't form. There has to be some gap, but not too big. You should be able to see the spark for any and all types of starter, whether electric or piezo... it is tiny and blue... look while the BBQ is well shaded.
Seeing that spark is your good to go indicator.
BTW you can buy piezo butane lighters... they make a distinctive snap. Work on the same principal.
Most lighters are flint and steel... again single spark.
