The leach tension relative to the foot tension is determined by the effective angle of pull of the clew line (along the bisector of the angle between the standing part and running part).
A knot which slides along the boom is fine, but I get better sail shape control if the standing part of the clew line is anchored to the boom with a buntline hitch or a timber hitch.
