Trash in the Keys

While teaching and sailing between Fort Lauderdale and the Keys I realized one day that you couldn't sail much more than a few minutes without seeing some type of plastic trash in the water it was discourging!

A lot of what we saw was plastic shopping bags and drink bottles, and it was plastic trash that always managed to be the culprit when we had a clogged engine intake and once a solidly plastic wrapped shaft and prop.

That was interesting because we must have picked it up in the gulfstream and carried it along wrapped around the rudder until we backed down to anchor and sucked it up into the prop. Took about and hour diving to cut it off and it filled two 30 gal. plastic trash bags, when I first dove on it the prop and shaft looked like a giant black cuetip!

How we can stop it and how we can clean it up is a mystery, what the future holds for the oceans we all love is scary!
