May start something here, but this is what we do when we are out, mostly talking about the Sea of Cortez where we can be at anchor or away from marinas of any type for months.
We separate our trash into 4 basic groups; glass/cans, paper, food, and plastic .
1.Glass and cans, I don't think to much about dropping some overboard. I try to break the glass on the way. I remove the label first. And like food, we NEVER toss it if we are a short distance (one or two days) from an anchorage or land.
2.Paper, we save to take ashore, (for that beach bonfire get-together) or if overloaded, we take the recycled paper and rip it up into small pieces, then bucket soak it into a slurry.
3.Food, we don't think it's bad to toss it overboard as long as we are miles away from land. We NEVER toss it if we are within a day or so of an anchorage. If we take it ashore, we may bury it. One other item, when at anchor, we do often feed the "Puppy fish" with bits of extra food when we get the chance.
4.Plastic, I try to cut it up into small pieces if I can. I wait until we make it to one of the beach Bar-B-Qs or have one of the beach bonfires. Then I use one of the cans, most likely a 3# coffee can, set it in (or very close to) the fire. I then drop in the plastic bits. At the end of the day I have something like a plastic hockey puck sort of thing. Once reduced like this, I don't think it's harmful to drop over in deep water. YES, I know it may give off harmful gasses when it melts/burns, but I'm not killing the fish/wildlife. And until they come up with not using plastic, we are stuck.
Yes, we do carry ur own bags to the market, or ask for paper. In Mexico, you want to take your own bags!
Hay, what ever happened to the biodegradable plastic? The plastic that they used to put a touch of cornstarch into the formula to make it bread down fast????? I used a batch of it some years back. I remember I used to purchase writing pens made of the stuff. The pocket clip never lasted long, so I knew it was working well!
