Ever heard of this guy in LA? 365 Days of Trash --kept all his trash and recycling for a year in his basement!

I think he's an LA Times writer...and has a family, and doesn't live in a giant house. I remember reading briefly about his experiment last year...pretty, um, challenging...and creative.
