I put the tube onto the drain plug directly. 
In Response To: Do you put it in the drain plug on the right side of the block, i.e., after letting gravity drain most of the coolant? ()
Then open the drain and put a few suction pumps into it. These SuckUps are really nice for draining oil out the dip stick hole, or getting to low spots in the bilge.

- Those pumps are very sensitive to the size of the housing
- By chance a Volvo shop yesterday referred me to a specialty marine pump shop in town --they said the same thing
