My wife and I are 70+ yr-old cruisers, at a crossroads about future boat plans, in need of advice on several issues. We have sailed a J-34c for 15 years and love the boat. However the big mainsail has become difficult for us to handle, despite lazy-jacks (we're both small, scrawny types). Would a Dutchman system be a major help?
Second concern is pulling up our anchor/chain rode-----has anyone had experience modifying a J (cored deck) to install a windlass?
Third thought regards an electric winch---is it feasible on this size boat and does it make a big difference?
Should we look for a new boat with all these aids?----reluctant to do this because we're not sure how many years we have left cruising under sail to make such a financial commitment, and we love our J34c.
Should we be thinking about a power boat?
