Putting gravity aside, the fixed end of a double-purchase halyard line has half the load of a single halyard. The section between the lower block and upper sheave also has half the tension. Together (additive) they have the same tension as a single halyard line. The section between the upper sheave and the winch at deck level also has half the tension of a single halyard. That means there is less overall compression load on the mast.
