help for old cruisers
A few answers....
Here is a trick to use when you need to core
Electric Winch
A few thoughts about that
If you have the money....
I have been watching and taking notes on this for future reference
PS. Clarification "Old School"
I've seen some of the same trend.
A few comments
Electric winches
A couple rowed up to us last weekend to say they'd sailed to Maine on my boat, in 1966.
A windlass install isn't a big deal...
We have two electric windless's on the bow. One for each anchor and
Gallows
Consider a cordless winch driver
Winchbit
Similar to what I did.
Garry did U move to Bradenton??
Probably a dumb thought but...
Catamarans do it all the time.....
A lot of line!
Not a dumb thought. It's "standard" with boats that have full-batten mainsails
We've had two sailboats which came with fully battened mains and don't have that rig.
LOL! I have over 100' of line to coil
exactly the method I use when racing...
While you are right about the line...
I don't think so
Yes, but you're forgetting to add the load on the fixed end of the line.
No I'm not. You're missing something.
Further, if the mast is deck-stepped and the halyard is lead to cockpit
No free lunch...
Yes, but then from the upper sheave to the mast base is half the load
I'll vote with Larry on this one...
Huh????....
There is a right answer...
Not quite...
Aw comon! You left out....
You guys need to check your physics...
With your grade school physics...
The point loading is the same where exactly?
I rather doubt it.
Yes, you are missing something..
The problem with your assertion...
Way wrong....
The conclusion is magic.
Damn, where is JAX when we need him? He'd settle this, once and for all (grin)
JAX is probably in Washington DC
Guess you better tell Harken (among others) they got it all wrong...
I didn't say it was wrong.
I'll take that bet! Jon E can hold the $$$'s.
Why 100:1? make it an even bet if you really think you're right
Merely accepting his offer!
Even at 1000:1, its a pretty safe bet...
Now I know how good your word is...
I said I'd cover your $10. What more do you want?
I'm only asking that you...
I said I would cover your $10 at 100:1.
Oops, 5th paragraph should have started, "In the two part case..."
Another use for the windlass
Yo can also wrap the rope drum with a heavy burlap bag
I commonly use the windlass to lift the mate up the mast in the bosuns chair...
... oh, forgot the bona fides.
Shudder. It's a long way down to a hard surface.
use it to pull back down the asymmetrical tack
Not age - a question of strength and agility.
Good analysis, Al. And good on ya!
