What about the existing chain?
In Response To:
Could not find any number any where on the Gypsy... so going to buy some lengths of chain...

Can you match that using measurements, or take a section of it to the chandler?

Anchor chain question...
Chain...
Yeah I can cut some off... it was just the "G3" thing that surprised me
This is "art" not science.....things change....
Caution
Pick up a 18" of a couple different types..see which one ACTUALLY fits.
Good idea. I might also try to remove the gypsy.
G43 by Acco
Actually there are gypsies for G3 chain...
My understanding agrees with yours...
WM is off the mark. You're 3G is probably BBB
What kind of windlass
Simpson Lawrance...
The gypsy number should be stamped into one of the chain pockets...
Thanks... I had no idea where to look...

Existing is G3. And while it works, supposedly is not ideal.
Why is G3 "not ideal"?
Supposedly not ideal for the Gypsy...
Huh, I didn't know BBB came in G4/HT...
(Whoops, meant to say "thought BBB was always G3 grade"
That has always been my understanding.
Turns out 5/16 HT fits beautifully...
Cool! And you get the advantage of more strength per weight that G4/HT gives you.
an excellent old windlass! make sure you keep lube in her, otherwise the chains inside will rust and break...
It works well... and feels good...
I had to replace my chain last season, so I snipped off a foot of the old
I went down to 1/4
so this raises a bit of a catch-22 question...
More scope is always better holding, according to the calcs
OTOH, in some anchorages you can't put out as much scope, so then heavier can be nice
That's why I'm starting to think about an anchor sentry.
Some physicist will chime in, I'm sure...
It would take a LOT of weight on a sentinel to have the effect you're describing
Well, shut me up.
Evens Estarzinger is a proponent of tandem anchors, as you describe
Also, a sentinel is an extra step to deploy
I still use one occasionally.
