Seems to me the whole key is a Z shaped airflow...

() So if you have aft facing (open facing aft) hatches, you need a forward facing air scoop. If you have forward facing (open facing forward) hatches, you need an aft facing scoop. The idea being that while air can be forced to change directions, the rain will not.
