which Tom likes to mention. Supposedly, back in the days, coastal schooners would station a crew member on the bow with a bag of potatos when there was a dungeon thick o fog. Crew member would throw the potatos as far as he could ahead of the boat. If there was a splash, all was well. If there was a thud, then it was hard alee!
