How many of us have crew that would not know what to do in an emergency anyway?
The "admiral" on my boat essentially acts like an auto pilot when I need to go forward or whatever; she would have no idea what to do in about 95% of any emergency situation that might crop up. She can start the engine and point the boat... I have insisted on that as a bare minimum.
But trying to get her to take some sort of "sudden captain" or "woman only" sailing class is like pulling teeth... usually comes with the comment "you know what to do... I'll just pick it up..."
And of course, to have a partner out there with me, no matter how reluctant, I go along... better than sailing alone. But yeah, the bottom line is it can be a worrisome situation.
