I went straight across in a norther that was petering out until I just got out of the current and then coasted along Cuba to the west and rounded Cabo San Antonio very close to stay out of the current and then headed south to Swan Island, Providencia, and then Bocas del Toro. But, my point being you can eventually get out of the current pretty close to Cuba.
