Hey Rod,
... I've definitely gotten the impression that this route thru the NW Caribbean is carrying a bit more "risk" nowadays... Just heard about a recent incident in Belize, where a charter boat was boarded and robbed, apparently the first incident of its kind in belize, which always seemed very safe to me when I was there a few years ago (aside from Belize City, of course) You might want to have a look at Noonsite, I believe they have the report listed there...
Sounds as if the "incidents" involving cruisers in the Rio Dulce have ratcheted up a notch again, as well, though I doubt you're thinking of going in there, anyway... But, I'd be very reluctant to make any stops along the Honduran mainland, especially after that Canadian cruiser was murdered in that one anchorage years ago... West Bay on Roatan I'm sure is still fine, that seems to be where everyone is hanging out now, but even when I was there a few years ago, a few of the other spots in Roatan I didn't feel entirely comfortable... Guanaja was fine, but there are some troubling things going on in Honduras right now, and even beck then there was considerable resentment between many residents of Roatan, over the influx of "undesirables" coming over there from the mainland...
Again, sorry to have to bring this up, but just wanted you to be aware... The recent incident in Belize is troubling, for a place that formerly seemed to be free of such worries...
best regards,
Jon
