Even though we sail coastal and rarely go beyond 20 miles out, my main reason for having it is in case we capsize. It sits on a shelf in the main cabin, and would auto-activate if we ever went upside-down.
Capsize is big one for me, followed by fire and collision. My boat is truly unsinkable (like a Boston Whaler).
