Just drops them off at the town dock and they are on their own. I seem to remember hearing anecdotally about a rather large person trying to get into one of the kayaks from the dock and I guess it was quite a spectacle. You would think there might be liability issues with this kind of thing.
Other places that rent kayaks are at the other end of the spectrum. Before we became sailors, my husband and I used to be whitewater raft guides, did a fair amount of canoeing, and had years of paddling experience. We tried to rent kayaks from one outfitter up here, but because we had not taken one of their own classes, they made us rent a single tandem kayak instead of two conventional kayaks. Despite our arguments that it would actually be safer to have two boats out there instead of one, they insisted on the tandem. Unbelievable.
