Anchorages thin out on the ocean side of Penobscot Bay.

The spot between Burnt and Little Burnt Islands is about as good as it gets out here. You know you're in the edge of the ocean as the water rarely stops moving and neither is the ocean ever silent. Birds act differently here, like we're all just passing through. There's a house and barn on Burnt Island and the remains of an old windmill. This is the bar that connects the islands at lower tides. It is a great sand beach. I woke up in my berth in the middle of the night to gentle waves coming over the bar at high tide. A while later, it was calm again as the bar rose to block the seas, and I went back to sleep.
