I'm not making assumptions

What assumptions do you think I'm making? If you don't have a motor, don't go outside the reef. It is just common sense to think through the consequences of your actions. Rowing a boat into a situation that may require more power or speed than you can muster to get home just isn't prudent. A 10 foot RIB with a 15 hp outboard is appropriate for heading around the point for some spear fishing but I'm sure you wouldn't take it across to the Azores. Put the RIB away on your Swan 53 and you can make the crossing reasonably safe. I wouldn't consider the Swan to be safety equipment, just the chosen means of transportation. Then again, there are people that would consider either trip to be inherently unsafe.

By the way, I have sailed through the Bahamas, I've dived on the great barrier reef, I've taken a RIB through a cut in a reef but no, I have not specifically been spear fishing in the Jumentos. And I agree that an inflatable with an appropriately sized outboard is a good idea when cruising in places like the Bahamas. I hope you aren't making assumptions about me
