I've had a couple episodes towing, one between Cat Island and Eleuthera.

There, sailing downwind, a big wind really built some seas. Our pram then (an 8' typical old plywood design) got very aggressive with us. Then I just tied a long line to it. It was fine, did quite a dance back there at times, and we made it to Eleuthera. Truth is Charlie, I had to break the rules too. It wouldn't fit on our then 28'er, but I was still going to the Bahamas, towing a dinghy or not. It would have never caused any danger, I'd have cast it off first. I could build another in no time.

Since then, we've made two trips to the Bahamas with that old dinghy, up the east coast. That one lasted 10 years and we turned it into a sandbox. We out grew it with 2 kids, so I built the larger Nutshell.

The 9'6" Nutshell is now over 20 so we have around 30 years of towing total, all coastal, Bahamas to Canada. The Nutshell tows better than our old pram so for our use, coastal sailing, it's a great simple system. You can break a few rules in your life.
