We have a 12" C-series mounted in the navigation station on Tropical Dance. When I purchased the chartplotter when it first came out I also purchased a second 'bale' or 'yoke' along with enough extra radar cable to reach where I might want it above decks. In my case it was under the dodger. The idea was to put a 2" hole from below decks through the cockpit coaming and attach rhe second bale there. Just snake the wires up and I could put the chartplotter either place. (there was no E series or repeater made at that time)
I ended up leaving it only in the navigation station on a double 'Ram Arm' swing out so I could also see it from the cockpit even though it was at a distance.
I honestly don't like my chartplotter in the cockpit. I like to look at the chartplotter/radar in the navigation station, go to the helm and then use my eyes and look around. I believe it forces me not to be lazy and at the same time makes me a better sailor as It's impossible to navigate by looking at a screen. It does make me crazy at times running up and down the companionway but that's the way it is. I do have a small black and white Garmin at the helm which records tracks so I can use them to retrace a line if I wish to.
The swing RAM arms are strong and good for a radar/chartplotter bombo. Here's a link to the arm I'm talking about. http://www.barcodegiant.com/ram-mount/part-ram-109v-1.htm?nt
