The combination of a tiller allowing the helmsman to sit forward in the cockpit, and the CP/radar display in the companionway, is hard to beat.
I had a horrible experience in poor visibility on another boat, that had its CP/radar on the pedestal. Blowing like stink, downwind in fog at night on the way to Halifax, with a chute up, it was all the helmsman could do to keep the boat under the chute. No time to keep an eye on the radar. Crew's eyes burning looking for traffic; no room or place around the wheel for them to watch the radar. Scary. Everyone would have been happier to have a radar visible to anyone other than the helmsman. Having the video games on the pedestal is great for coastal cruising in benign conditions, but it really sucks in poor conditions when the helmsman is preoccupied with sailing the boat. So it's a hard choice...I would make sure that the radar/CP is accessible to someone who is not driving (first priority), and reasonably visible to a single-handing helmsman as a secondary "nice to have." Having it all below is really a poor choice today, with all of the weatherproof gear available.
