A high performance yawl is an oxymoron for some designers, but not Bruce Kirby. I saw 40 WINKS out the water for some rudder repair and was struck by the dinghy shape as I approached(135mm lens).
I now know the owner of this boat but have yet to see it out sailing. He likes it a lot, only complaint is the finish below. I notice he uses it like a daysailor even though it was designed with very minimal accommodations.
36' dinghy, in a way(Laser). Light, plenty of SA/D, 3'3" draft. Turns out he's done a similar yawl design in 38'. Sort of "cruising light" ideas for Bahamas and Cape Cod shoal waters.
We should be seeing the new Fontaine daysailor design come out of the sheds soon(new construction in Rockport Harbor), that goes beyond Kirbys "old style" shoal draft stubkeel configuration. Fontaine moved the board all inside the hull on the for max shoal draft for the client, 2'8" draft in 36'.
