End certainly gives the best mechanical advantage, but..

it may not be best from a practical standpoint. After all, those two lines are there all the time and will swing across the cockpit every time you tack. I can see a pair of lines to the end of my boom hanging up on me, the winches, or the dodger. I think I'd find a spot a bit forward that didn't hang up or cause problems, then beef it up as needed.
