Wood is the future of boatbuilding?

At the least, you can say it is part of the future. Rockport Marine is building another Fontaine designed boat, out of wood. This one is 50'. Not like the old wooden builds at all, this is a cold molded hull of a modern design. But unlike more design constrained all glass boats, the owner has nearly full flexibility to customize his/her boat.

It's interesting that a small custom builder like this can compete with larger builders(there's almost always a bidding process for these builds). A tight-highly skilled workforce and a experienced management makes some of these small builders very efficient to work with if you're looking for a new custom 50'er. And they have an in-house design staff well experienced in this type of build to.

In some ways, this Fontaine 50 has more characteristics of older designs. Not an enormous 50'er in beam or volume for dwelling space, just a moderate beam for it's length, for best all around sailing performance.
