Ok, but the GRP v Wood tradeoffs are orthogonal to the custom/production tradeoffs.

Perhaps your point was that IF custom boatbuilding is the future of 50+, then it enables wood as an option, because the costs are high in either case (the design and construction flexibility is similar). That much I agree with - there are no cost savings for GRP over wood in a custom boat, while in a production boat wood is simply not cost effective as there is no way to tool it. So a customer for a custom 50 foot boat can choose between wood and plastic without considerations of cost.

I'll take mine in plastic, please - although I did cover a good portion of it with thin bits of wood .
