You are going to "lose" the turning mechanism, Tom. Why not just make a "collar" which you can weld (and/or bolt) two hooks to. They you can simply bolt that with countersunk screws to your boom fitting which is part of the gooseneck.

You want the hooks to not "engage the mast" when you're running. I think you can make the hooks engage the stacked sail as you furl it.
