Having done the same project, the only thing I could figure was that the new electronics are smaller allowing for a smaller case which means less materials which is then cheaper to manufacture? Not sure my logic is sound but then no one ever accused me of that.

Fortunately, the PO was not very good at such things so he chose to bracket mount the old radio. I complicated things for the owner after me by surface mounting the new radio.
