Sorry about your short 50 mile range but I would think it's a performance decision. A bigger tank and extra fuel make for a weight issue.
You could add a second tank and a larger electrical system if you don't race. If you do race seriously you can't cruise comfortably. Cruising and racing just don't mix without sacrifices on both sides.
