And I had simply forgotten that hey, I can't start the engine without that switch in place... but I will check the actual wiring to verify whether that is due to a relay or if it is due to the switch.

I recall some pretty funky wiring on a friends boat that was highly dependent on relays... so that is the sort of thing to check for.
