It can be a bad ground connection too...

As Jonathan (DDW) points out. The voltage drop of the battery under load would indicate lack of capacity of the battery; however, it might be that you can conduct voltage, but not carry amperage, due to a bad connection. Adding EXTRA capacity by linking the batteries together may just be masking an evolving issue.

The first question is: Is the battery just shot. Then I'd start to look at the whole circuit (maybe then the starter itself).
