Full size kitchen sink drains...

I have been through a lot of kitchen sink drains on the boat.

Don't slam PVC drainpipe too much. The chromed brass that is the household standard it far worse for marine use. The brass will corrode away quickly in salt water. The PVC will last forever if installed properly.

Most kitchen sink drain fittings, even those that say "All Stainless" are bad news. "All Stainless" is often a lie. Even the expensive drains are a problem. Often they are chrome plated brass and suffer the same fate as chromed brass drainpipes.

A few years ago, after having to replace the sink drains for the upmteenth time, I went to a very good plumbing supply company in Chicago. I explained the problem to the counter guy and the search began. He brought out drain after drain and they all had brass or pot metal parts. He talked to the boss who said "show him a Blanco". Success at last. The Blanco is stamped stainless steel with a PVC cup underneath it. The PVC cup clamps to the stainless upper part with a screw that goes into a brass insert. The basket is stainless and plastic. The brass insert in the PVC cup can be replaced with a Stainless T nut. When I say stamped stainless don't think cheap. They are will made and about $50 each. Blanco is high end stuff.

That was at least 5 to 6 years ago now. The chrome plating on the plastic knob in the sink basket is worn away - the rest is like new. I replaced the sink two years ago but kept the old drains.

One caveat. Blanco makes two styles of sink drain to you need to look at both to make sure you get the right one.

Kudos to the plumbing supply counter guy and his boss. They worked with me for at least half an hour and showed me a dozen or more sink drains for a one hundred dollar sale. When they understood my problem, even though it was an "outside the box" problem they solved it.
