I own a Tohatsu 3.5, a Honda 2, and a Honda 8.

So far, I've had no trouble with any of them. I once owned a Suzuki 2.5 and had to have it jetted out a bit as it struggled from idle to speed but after jetting it out it ran well, though not as fuel efficient.
I try to use non alcohol fuel when I can, always use Stabil or SeaFoam.

- Having somewhat the same trouble-check your fuel pump. May not be it, but worth checking
