Motoring from Rockland to Pulpit Harbor yesterday in dense fog (one boat length), a radar target appeared on my port and was also transmitting a AIS. As I motored along its relative position did not change in respect to mine. We were on an intercept course. The beauty of AIS is that you can see the ships name and I radioed S/V Thalia. Yes, he said, He sees me on his starboard both on AIS and Radar he will pass astern of me.
As the minutes passed I got very, very nervous..this was to close for my sensibilities.
I did a emergency veer to port aiming for his stern. I passed behind him. It was a British vessel pretty big--2 crew lining both sides.
These Brits may be used to cutting it close but I was rattled.
My mistake was not radioing again telling him my instruments showed him to close for my comfort. Live and learn.
Cooling out in Pulpit Harbor for a few days.
Oh, I sae Bruce on AIS this afternoon going into Camden, I think..
