I used it twice in Maine -- but stopped using it.

The boats that worry me there are i) motor yachts, lobster boats, or speed boats that have so much internal noise when they're roaring around, the couldn't hear it; and ii) is so loud that I can't hear those other boats coming.

I asked a bunch of Maine-ites about it: They laughed like I was a greenhorn at a dude ranch.

I think if you were in the outer reaches where the likelihood of meeting a fishing boat working nets or traps -- as you've ventured afar, Jon -- I might try ours.
