Foghorns are tough to figure direction in fog as the sound seems to come from...where?

My last incident with another boat in the fog was a freighter which I thought was moving east in the Strait of Juan de Fuca....we both sounded foghorns. We were in my 28' sailboat motoring along heading WNW out of Port Angeles angling out of the harbor entrance. In the blink of an eye that big sonofabitch cut across my bow about 100' ahead moving at about ten knots in fog so thick you couldn't see but a third of the ship at any moment. He apparently was heading into P.A..... I don't think AIS was invented then but mighta been.

Tooooooooo close for comfort!
