Same for me with monel tanks. There is an airspace between.

Yes. Lid, 2 inch airspace, then berth top. then cushion. No problems
Could take a bit of water, then just moisture to keep the deterioration going?

Unless I'm wrong, the silicone would essentially be a gasket withe PVC.
How about this stuff... silkaflex 221
I don't think anything sticks well to PVC.
If I am going to do that, why not seal the plywood all around?
Poly and PVC are not the same as Fiberglass
