makes sense to me

When we sail downwind under jib alone, I always have the main halyard attached at the aft end of the boom, under tension so that the mainsheet works with it to take some of the load if the aft shrouds give a little. (We have no backstay, just adjustable topshrouds that are well aft of the mast and triangulate with the headstay).
