...IMHO, it's not much of a preventer if it's gonna allow the boom to cross all the way over to the other tack... Potential good way to break a boom, as well, as it sounds as if you're attaching it mid-boom, right?
Seems to me the point of a preventer is to keep the boom in place, even if the sail itself jibes, the boom will not... Maybe it's just me, but I would not want to sail with a preventer that had that amount of stretch - you certainly want some, to absorb a shock load if the main gets backwinded, or if you dip the boom, and climbing rope is often recommended for this application...
