I've always been surprised more people don't have them...

I've got a boom brake.
Well, then, I wouldn't call that a preventer - are you sure that's line, and not shock cord...? (grin)
It just sort of turned out that way,
Don't be intimidated by Jon. Anyone who has bought a
No doubt, we tend to tout the gear we own... But it's also true, we often disparage gear we've never used.... (grin)

Hasn't happened yet. (link)
Yes...that's a factor
Ain't gonna happen, Ron - hell, ordinary mid-boom sheeting will break any boom way before a Boom Brake ever will...
This is where a fat-assed, or at least big-hipped, boat like mine excels... (pic)
Er, in my post it should read "attach the boom brake well out of the way" (and not "preventer well out of the way") (nm)
My system is different. I have a strong block
still don't get it....
A preventer is different than a brake.
Dave, from what I understand, you can also use a boom brake for (pic)
Yeah, that's exactly why a brake is so far superior to a preventer.
OK Dave got it, thanks (nm)
Great for peace of mind.
Don't have one, can't rig one.
Don't have one - it would just create a tripping hazard when going forward, plus I don't need one for two reasons...
I'd think the mizzen would really be as big a benefit to have a boom break on it as on on the main. (nm)
Like Dan Y, I center the mizzen before jibing...
It looks very nice, but, I think I'm with Todd on this one ...
I don't know, John - a 40-footer is definitely at the upper range of what I'd feel comfortable clipping a preventer...
Yup, bothers me too, sometimes ...
Agree on the tripping concern, although we spend a lot of time DW... (link)
Will be a greater tripping hazzard if ....
Got one. Use it.

First boom brake I saw was called a Walder
aware of them and recommended one to a friend...
We use a permanent preventer made from a thick rubber strap . . . (pic)
and may I ask which Boom Brake you find superior? :) Let me guess... (link)
Yeah, I was looking for you. I need a new American Rigging tee-shirt.
Yea, and where's mine???????? *o (nm)
I'll give you one if you promise to give one to Chuck too... (link) (pic)
I'll have to make sure you get one. They're free with an order over $1,000.00 but for you, I'll make an exception. :) (nm) (link)
I use a permanent, cockpit-led preventer, as described here (link)
