First boom brake I saw was called a Walder

and was made and marketed by a Frenchman. It was very simple and looked as though it would work. Some years ago, when I was researching in-boom furlers for an article, the ProFurl folk told me they sold a boom brake with the package. The booms with all that furling gear in them are a lot heavier than regular booms -- more weight, more momentum, more smash in a jibe -- even a controlled one.
