When Bruce first came out the one spot that was a large anchoring worry to me and also where I happened to like to anchor a lot was about six inches of gelatinous goo on top of hard sand in twenty feet. The wind was typically across the current/tide change line and could on occasion supersede the tides. The Bruce failed consistently to reset and kept coming up with mudballs as did my original Danforth anchor which is sort of the mainstay in Columbia River anchoring. My final solution was either a Bahamian moor, which is tedious to do for one night or set bow and stern anchors or....use a CQR which did fine in that situation.
My other anchor bottom choice on the Columbia system is all sand, often hard sand, as so much of the bottom is. I really found the Bruce wasn't all that reliable for reset there, either. For my Last boat which is quite small I have a lightweight stern hook and 15 lb Manson supreme. Spade, Rocna, Buegel, Manson, etc. in the end IMHO are all variations of similar principles and parts taken from this anchor or that and rearranged and named "new, improved".
