Every NMEA 0183 I have used...

() is a single TD line and a single RD line with reference to ground. I am using RS-232 to USB converters for GPS and AIS data into my PC using just a signal and ground. I do not believe that would be to spec on RS-422. I have used NMEA output direct to RS-232 inputs on PCs with no difficulties.
If that does not mean that it is RS-232 than I am wrong.
