Hi all,
When we were getting ready to tow Guenevere back to the USA from Guaymas Mexico, we did a quick inspection of her. A friend suggested that we might have a crack in one of them. NO crack could be seen, just a bit of discoloration was showing.
Like a lot of those things that sit at the back of your brain and nag, nag, nag, you late at night, AND because I am also replacing all of the standing rigging, I decided to go ahead and replace the chain plates. After all, they have been on the boat since she was built.
I went to the boat this morning to remove the port side chain plates to use as templates for the new ones. 2 of them came off just fine.
When I went to remove the third one, I removed all (4) but one carriage bolt. as soon as I started to pull the top away from the hull to loosen that last bolt, I felt the top half of the plate bend!
I did manage to get it off in one piece and took some photos.
As I was shooting a bit of video the plate fell apart in my hand! I will do a Youtube video of the R & R of my chain plates as soon as I get the new ones made. It WILL show how the plate looked before and how easy it broke.
