I do not know about going bigger

This is a Nor'Sea 27. I would think that 1/4 inch that wide is even over kill. I doubt the standing rigging is more then 1/4 inch.
I would like to know why the first one failed? I am not an engineer or know anything about metal, so don't flame but add to my knowledge.
